Logo Turbiwatt

Since 2023 AQWatt has been Turbiwatt's technical-commercial agent for all requests and projects in the Benelux. Request for information, feasibility study, offer up to on-site measurement, site monitoring and commissioning, Aqwatt is your single point of “Turbiwatt” contact!

Turbiwatt has developed turbines specifically adapted to the exploitation of low heads. Since 2010, with the assistance of the CEA, Turbiwatt has developed a range of products dedicated to run-of-river applications, profitable and efficient from 1.20 m drop. The objective was to favor a simple, robust, economical and standardized design to achieve a competitive cost price on low powers but without concessions on performance.

Today, Turbiwatt has a complete range producing from 3 to 130 kW per unit with excellent overall efficiency (+/- 80%). Silent and submerged, Turbiwatt turbines are without noise or visual nuisance. Ultra compact, their installation is greatly facilitated (generator integrated into the turbine).

With more than 150 installations in around ten countries (France, Germany, Austria, Japan, etc.), Turbiwatt has built up solid experience in the entire deployment of hydroelectricity projects.

Dam constructions and water management

Dam constructions and water management

Logo Aqwatt
Managing water requires expertise, from the design all the way up to the construction of minor and major dam constructions. The weir installations by Lukas Anlagenbau we supply provide years of carefree operation, thanks to their robust build using standard industrial elements. AQWatt assumes project management from the final design up to the installation and the associated commissioning. Thanks to our local presence, AQWatt is on hand as your first port of call. We handle all periodic maintenance and any repairs required, making sure your lifting gate, overflow, shutter weir or tilting gate weir operates at its best at all times.

Alongside the mechanical implementation, the control engineering aspects are also part of our core duties, involving automatic level adjustment of upstream or downstream water levels, accurate flow rate measurements, alerts, camera surveillance and even no-break solutions where required, making sure the operation stays safe at all times, even in case of power cuts.

Weed cleaners and debris gratings

Weed cleaners and debris gratings

Logo Aqwatt
Inside hydroelectric power plants, debris gratings are required to protect the water wheels or turbines against floating debris and to prevent fish from ingressing by putting in place fine-meshed gratings. Weed screens are indispensable at pumping stations, water collectors, water treatment installations, drinking water plants, etc. to stave off floating debris and to act as an added protection barrier. Bar interspaces down as little as just 5 mm are available to prevent the ingress of fish and other aquatic fauna as part of the water intake and other installations further up the processing chain.

The more fine-meshed the weed screen or debris grating, the better the protection. However, this also means the more floating debris is collected up against these gratings. The manual cleaning of the debris gratings is doable only in case of very small or private installations. Modern weed cleaners on the other hand clean the bars fully automatically and autonomously dump the floating debris that has been scraped off into a skip.

Thanks to level sensors which detect the amount of debris, camera surveillance and full skip alerts a standalone, automated weed cleaner has become unmissable for installations that operate around the clock.

Both horizontal and vertical bars and cleaners are available, ranging from just 1 metre up to more than 10 to 15 metres deep where telescopic arms are used. Thanks to its savoir-faire and longstanding experience with water engineering, German company Lukas Anlagenbau invariably comes up with an appropriate solution. Minor adjustments to tried and tested concepts deliver custom-built and cost-efficient solutions.

Hydro power and water mills

Hydro power and water mills

Logo Aqwatt

As one of the oldest energy applications, hydro power has moved on from a strictly mechanical form of energy to become a way of generating fully hydroelectric power. Old water mills (used as pumping / lifting stations) still extract water from the land in the time-honoured way, but modern-day hydroelectric power plants have since become efficient power plants that operate entirely autonomously. From the design stage, all enabling conditions and the maximum energy yield at a minimal construction cost requirement are factored in, whilst consistently also considering the environmental aspects. The fish-friendliness of hydroelectric power plants is very much a preponderant consideration in this, especially on natural waterways. Modern Zuppinger or Poncelet water wheels or Archimedes screws do not cause any kind of fish mortality and in the case of more traditional Kaplan, Turgo, cross-flow or Francis turbines fish are prevented from swimming into the turbine room thanks to a fine-meshed grille at the power station’s water intake point.

Starting with the engineering study across the design all the way up to and including the construction, AQWatt weighs in with the relevant know-how to turn your project into a successful and sustainable hydroelectric power plant.

How does a hydroelectric power plant work

Electricity can be generated by way of hydro power at locations that have a sufficiently continuous flow rate and a sufficient height of fall. Flowing water in a brook or a river for instance are insufficient to generate power. It takes a waterfall to garner a sufficient flow rate and difference in height to enable power to be generated.

AQWatt converts your old private water mill to enable it to generate electrical power, whilst preserving the charm and historical prestige of your mill. In doing so, you get to run your own micro-hydroelectric power plant that will ample cater for your own energy requirements. Especially for waterside taverns, inns and restaurants, having your own power generation installation adds to the visual appeal whilst serving as a sustainable added value.

Full new-build projects tend to have lead times ranging from 3 to 5 years, starting out with a feasibility study. The project engineering study requires a due focus of attention to go out to and alignment with authorities such as water management boards, town and country planning, not to mention environmental organisations. The design takes due account of these enabling conditions whereby we work up a total concept that is geared to your specific situation and needs as the project owner, whilst working in joint consultation with contractors and turbine or water wheel suppliers.

AQWatt is not tied to contractors or suppliers of turbines or water wheels. At all times, we go for the most cost-efficient solution by combining in-house efforts, local collaborations and international know-how.
